Faith and Facebook Forum

Topics to be explored will include:  Is my child safe on the internet?  Should I let them have a Facebook account or email?  What age?  How do I enable parental controls on our home computer?  What is cyber-bullying?  How do we walk faithfully with our children as they journey through cyberspace at ever-increasing speeds?

The forum is for parents, grandparents, and all adults who are interested.  Participants will receive resources, share with other parents about concerns and questions, all facilitated by John Parsons.  He is the founder of Kokepollie Studios, a web design and social media consulting business.  He specializes in church website design, and travels around Texas teaching about social media as it relates to ministry.  He also volunteers as the youth director at Amazing Grace, San Antonio.

9/26/11 Forum Follow-up:

For those who were not able to attend, John did a great job of highlighting the ease of finding someone's personal information on the internet.  The need to be discrete in what you put on the internet goes a long way for safety of adults and children.  This is why communication between parents and children are so important, because it builds trust and confidence in children as they engage in social networks in person and on the internet.

We focused a lot on Facebook and some of the ins and outs of how to adjust settings, and which settings are appropriate and best for youth at different ages.

I believe all came away with a better sense of what to be aware when on the internet, but also how to walk with children faithfully and honestly as they journey with others through cyberspace.

Thanks John!

This is one of three forums being held this fall through Elijah's Cave to enrich the faith conversations of families in the Hill Country.  It is made possible by a vision grant through the Southwestern Texas Synod.
